Signs and Symptoms

The novel coronavirus (COVID-19) can cause illness ranging from a very mild, cold-like illness to a severe lung infection.

Symptoms

COVID-19 has common symptoms such as:

  • fever, cough, difficulty breathing

COVID-19 has less common symptoms such as:

  • unexplained fatigue, delirium (a serious medical condition that involves confusion, changes to memory and odd behaviours), falls, acute functional decline, worsening of chronic conditions, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, chills, headaches, croup, or loss of taste/smell  

COVID-19 may also present as new or worsening respiratory symptoms such as:

  • sore throat, runny nose, sneezing, nasal congestion, hoarse voice or difficulty swallowing

Timing

The World Health Organization advises that symptoms may appear in a few as 2 days or as long as 10 to 14 days after being exposed to someone with the 2019 Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19).  This time period may also be refined as new information comes out.

Require Medical Attention - What To Do?

If you live in Renfrew County and District, have a health concern (including a concern related to COVID-19) and need to speak to a physician, you should first call your family physician’s office.

If you do not have a family physician or cannot access your family physician, call the Renfrew County Virtual Triage and Assessment Centre at 1-844-727-6404. A medical receptionist will connect you with care and support from a nurse practitioner, family physician and/or community paramedic. This new service is covered by OHIP with a valid health card. Learn more at www.rcvtac.ca.

If you are ill, compromised or elderly our group would like to offer to be of assistance to you. If you have just arrived home from vacation and you are in self isolation, we are available for you in any way that is needed.

Directive for Mask/Face Coverings in Enclosed Public Spaces in Effect July 14th

July 9, 2020 - Further to the Eastern Region Medical Officers of Health Announcement on July 6, Renfrew County and District Health Unit (RCDHU) has released a local directive requiring masks or face coverings be worn in enclosed public spaces.  The directive comes into effect on Tuesday, July 14th.  RCDHU's first step for implementation of this directive is a gradual education approach to be further assessed going forward.  This directive is to be primarily used to educate people on mask use in enclosed public spaces because 2-metre physical distancing cannot always be maintained.

Ontario Extends Emergency Order Until July 22, 2020

July 9, 2020 - The Ontario government, in consultation with Ontario's Chief Medical Officer of Health, has extended all emergency orders currently in force that were made under s.7.0.2(4) of the Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act to July 22, 2020.  The extension was made to ensure the province maintains the necessary flexibility to protect public health and safety as more businesses reopen and people go back to work.

Local Health Units Announce Regional Approach to Mandatory Masks

Ontario Extends Emergency Order Until July 10, 2020

June 27, 2020 - The Ontario government has extended all emergency order currently in force that were made under s.7.0.2 (4) of the Emergency Management and Civil Protections Act until July 10, 2020, while removing restrictions that were limiting access to certain sport training facilities.  This decision was made in consultation with Ontario's Chief Medical Officer of Health to ensure the safe and gradual reopening of the province on a regional basis can continue as part of Ontario's Framework for Reopening the Province.

Unauthorized Test Kits Claiming to Diagnose or Detect COVID-19 Put Your Health at Risk

OTTAWA - Health Canada is warning Canadians not to buy home diagnostic test kits, including mail-in sample collection kits, claiming to diagnose or detect COVID-19 because they may provide inaccurate or false results.  These products have not been authorized by Health Canada, which means they have not been reviewed for safety, quality or effectiveness.

News Release - Residents Asked To Wear Masks Where Physical Distancing Is Not Possible

May 15, 2020 - Dr. Cushmas has recommended that residents of Renfrew County and District wear masks in public, when physical distancing cannot be maintained.  An example is wearing a mask in grocery stores or when you must come in close contact with others.  According to Dr. Cushman, "it is particularly important if you cannot observe the 2-metre rule, it is best to wear a mask.  

This is in response to the easing of mobility restrictions provincially across the province.

Consumer Alert: Beware of Scams

The Ontario Energy Board (OEB) is aware of increasing efforts by scam artists attempting to take advantage of consumer uncertainty during this COVID-19 emergency.  The OEB has taken steps to ensure that the power of your home or low-volume small business cannot be disconnected for non-payment by your utility until July 31, 2020.  If you receive a message, text or phone call from someone posing as a utility representative and threatening to disconnect your power, do not respond to it - contact your utility directly using the telephone number displayed on your bills.

Community and Public Allotment Gardens

April 27, 2020 - Given the evolving situation, the government has made an amendment to the Emergency Order under the Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act as set out in O Reg. 104/20.  This decision is endorsed by the Chief Medical Officer of Health.  Effective immediately, the Ontario government is allowing the use of allotment and community gardens across Ontario, provided that people practice physical distancing and do not gather in groups of more than five.

April 23, 2020 - The Assistant Deputy Minister, Policy, Programs and Strategic Partnerships Division and the Assistant Deputy Minister of Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Division have advised that Protecting the health and well-being of all Ontarians is our government’s top priority, especially during the COVID-19 outbreak.  On March 30th, Ontario’s Chief Medical Officer of Health recommended that individuals over 70 years of age to self-isolate.  We need to do everything we can to protect our seniors and most vulnerable citizens. 

Ontario is launching the new Ontario Community Support Program to assist low-income seniors and people with disabilities in need.

Attached is the list of essential workplaces in response to COVID-19 (2019 Novel Coronavirus).

If you have any questions about what will be open or impacts to your business or employment, read the frequently asked questions or call the Stop the Spread Business Information Line at 1-888-444-3659.

Following advice from Ontario's Chief Medical Officer of Health, on April 3, 2020, Ontario updated the list of essential businesses that can remain open.  The restrictions are aimed at further reducing contact between people and stopping the spread of COVID-19.

By 11:59 p.m. Saturday, April 4, 2020 businesses that are not identified on this list must close their physical locations.

News Release - Ontario Increasing Mental Health Support During COVID-19

April 2, 2020 - Ontario government is making it easier for everyone, especially those on the front lines, to reach out for mental health support during the COVID-19 outbreak.  To improve access, the province is providing emergency funding of up to $12 million to immediately expand online and virtual mental health supports and $2.6 million to hire new psychologists and other mental health workers to support Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) personnel.

March 30, 2020 - In an effort to stop the spread of COVID-19 and keep people home, the Government of Ontario has extended the Declaration of Emergency and associated emergency gatherings.  

In addition, Ontario is issuing a new emergency order under the Emergency Management and Civil Protection Act to close all outdoor recreational amenities, such as sports fields and playgrounds, effective immediately.  These actions are based on the advice of the Chief Medical Officer of Health.

News Release - RCDHU Confirms Second Case of COVID-19

March 29, 2020 - Renfrew County and District Health Unit (RCDHU) confirms the second positive laboratory-confirmed case of novel coronavirus 2019 (C0VID-19) in Renfrew County and District.  A woman in her 30's developed mild symptoms and was tested at home by paramedics of The County of Renfrew Community Paramedic Program on March 27, 20920.  She currently remains at home in isolation and is being monitored.

News Release - Ontario Orders the Mandatory Closure of All Non-Essential Workplaces to Fight Spread of COVID-19

March 23, 2020 - To further contain the spread of COVID-19, the Ontario Government will order the mandatory closure of all non-essential workplaces effective as of Tuesday, March 24th at 11:59 p.m.  This closure will be in effect for 14 days with the possibility of extending this order as the situation evolves.  A full list of businesses that are permitted to stay open will be released tomorrow.

The province has launched a toll-free line 1-888-444-3659 to provide support to Ontario businesses who have questions about closures of at-risk workplaces or how emergency measures impact their business. 

News Release - Ontario Extending Validation Periods

March 19, 2020 - As part of the province's enhanced measures, the Ministry of Transportation and Ministry of Health, in cooperation with the Ministry of Government and Consumer Services and ServiceOntario, is extending the validity period of driving products, services and health cards.  

These changes reduce the need for in-person visits to ServiceOntario, International Registration Plan offices and DriveTest centres during the COVID-19 outbreak, helping to promote social distancing and contain the spread of the virus.

These new regulations include extensions for driver licences, licence plate validation, Ontario Photo Cards and Commercial Vehicle Operator Registration certificates, among others.  Expiring and expired health cards will continue to provide access to health services.
